Mac OSX font question

I have 2 issues - Safari suddenly stopped showing accented characters (it is set to unicode). I switched to Firefox for that, but if anyone has any ideas what happened I'd sure like to fix it.

More urgently, can someone tell me the best way to type Esperanto characters on the Mac? Do I need any special fonts? Where might I find them? What are the key-strokes?

Thank you!

It's real easy to type Esperanto characters in Mac OS X. Open "System Preferences", choose "International", choose "Input Menu". Then, find "U.S. Extended" in the list and check the box. Make sure it's the only checked box (out of the keyboard layouts).

Now, to type circumflexed letters, press Option-6, then the appropriate letter. E.g., Option-6-s makes an ŝ. Use Option-b-n to make a ŭ. (This also works for making other accented letters, e.g., Option-e-a is an á, Option-n-n is an ñ, et c.)

As for Safari, what happens when you choose "Default", or "Western (ISO Latin 1)" in "View > Text Encoding"?

Ekz, Opcio-6-s kreas ŝ-on. Uzu Opcio-b-u por krei ŭ-on. (Tiu metodo ankaŭ funkcias por krei aliajn supersignajn literojn, ekz. Opcio-e-a estas á, Opcio-n-n estas ñ, k.t.p.)

Rilate al Safari, kio okazas kiam vi elektas "Defaŭlton", aŭ "Okcidentan (ISO Latina 1)" en "Vido > Teksta Enkodo"?

I've also having been trouble with accents in Safari. They all show up as characters from the Hebrew alphabet, when the text encoding is set as default. When I set it to Western the next looks nonsensical.

Have you upgraded to Mac OS X 10.4.4? Perhaps the Safari update solves the problem. Or, failing that, try going through Font Book and resolve any duplicates (find the fonts with a dot next to them, and then select "Resolve Duplicates" from the Edit menu).

Aha!! That fixed the safari font issue. Dankon!

My husband just pointed out that the sound links on Lernu! aren't working in either browser - I don't suppose you have any ideas on that? *fingers crossed* I have reinstalled Real Player....?

It works!! Dankon! Dankon!

I'm pretty sure it's a JavaScript problem rather than an issue with Real Player, because I can pull out the URL to the sound file (for example, Ch. 1 of Gerda Malaperis — http://www.lernu.net/sonoj/gerda/1-1.swf ) and it works fine. Actually you could just go to the directory http://www.lernu.net/sonoj/ , and try to find what you're looking for based on the file name.

But I'm glad the Safari fix worked for you. =)

My favorite input method is still the one that I created way back in this post in Nov. 2003.

(You may want to read the entire thread to get the context.)

and in case you don't want to read the entire thread, in summary:

There's a site that lets you create input methods for OSX. Talking with some other posters, I created one to convert Cx into Ĉ, etc., etc. Then provided a link for people to download it so you don't have to go through the trouble. Just drop the .rsrc file in ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts

wow... the thread was a bit confusing...

Do you know if that will work with 10.4? I've tried several things that were done for 10.2 and 10.3 and none of them work in Tiger....

I typed the Ĉ in that post with that very input method under OSX 10.4.4. So, it appears to work. :)

Yeah, I was going to point to that discussion. (I think there was also a later (or earlier) post where we continued the discussion.)
